Remember how The Doctor is always touted as the last of his kind? That’s not usually true. There’s another Time Lord that keeps showing up regularly and the name he chose is The Master.
I want to talk specifically about The Master that shows up in The Sound of Drums, opposite the Tenth Doctor, because he is brilliant in that iteration.
Portrayed by John Simm, The Master leaves you with no misconceptions about whether he’s a hero or a villain. He’s rotten to the core, but manages to be funny and charming while doing it.
I never understood how evil masterminds get so many henchmen to join their cause, but after watching The Master for a few minutes I was ready to sign up so we could have lunch together and tell stories.
Yes, I’m aware of how ridiculous I sound right now.
He also made a move that made the grammar nerd in me stand up and applaud. He ordered that the population of earth should be decimated. Then he elaborates saying, “remove one tenth of the population.”
He used decimate properly. Something that almost never happens in entertainment, or otherwise.
One The Master’s more recent tricks was answering a question I’ve had for a long time. Do time lords have males and females? Are they all male? Do sexes even exist?
On The Master’s latest return, portrayed by Michelle Gomez, he has become she. Missy, short for The Mistress.
I still wonder if we’ll ever see a female Doctor, even knowing it’s possible. I kind of want to see it. Can’t guarantee I’d like it, but I do want to see it.
The last we saw The Master/Mistress, she was surrounded by angry Daleks, but attempting to tell them she had a new plan, so that’s not the last we’ll see of her.
I’m glad. I think The Master may be my favourite villain yet. But I do hope he/she remains as humorous as John and Michelle have portrayed him/her.
What’s your opinion of The Master? Would you want to see a female Doctor?
