Two posts in one day? If you like the idea of this, don’t get used to it, and if you’re already sick of hearing from me, don’t worry, I can’t possibly keep up this speed.
Set out by The Broke & the Bookish, here is my Top Ten Series I’ve Been Meaning to Start but Haven’t.
Maze Runner
I’ve heard people say the movie is better than the book, which concerns me a little since I thought the movie was ‘just okay’. Regardless, I still have some interest in checking out this series.
Discworld
I’ve been told that Discworld isn’t really a series as much as a series of standalone stories that take place in the same world with recurring characters. Regardless, this has been on my list for some time.
Seraphim
This is one of those situations where I already own the book and, somehow, still haven’t started it. I blame Supernatural for this purchase. The level of angel battles that I’ve always wanted to see on that show (but never have) might finally take place in the form of this book.
The Great Library
Anyone who loves books can’t possibly avoid such a book-centric novel. The premise reminds me of Fahrenheit 451 with an even better twist.
The Illuminae Files
2 mega corporations battling over the world. Enough said.
Shades of Magic
This one didn’t fall onto my radar until I started following a lot of book bloggers. Soon after, this popped up everywhere. I would say it’s high on my list, but it feels like EVERYTHING is high on my list!
Lorien Legacies
I really loved this movie. It was necessarily a ‘great’ movie, but I found it so entertaining and I couldn’t stop thinking about the world it had created and the characters it featured. It’s been on my list ever since.
Inkworld
Remember what I sound about the Pittacus Lore series? Same goes for this one.
The Nevernight Chronicle
A school for assassins? Where do I sign up? I’m picturing Hogwarts but Hermione is a stone-cold killer with a throwing knife and Ron can nail a target from 500 yards in high wind.
Elantris
I’ve been a Sanderson fan for a long time, even though I haven’t read any of his books. Confused? I know. I’ve listened to his podcast (Writing Excuses) for something like 10 years. Throughout that time I’ve always intended to read his books and it just hasn’t happened yet. That’s a long time, but I’m not giving up.
Thanks for some suggestions. I have only heard of the first one- And I didn’t know it was i a series?
After the Maze Runner is The Scorch Trials and then The Death Cure. I think they did 2 prequel books as well. Can’t remember what they were called.
I’ve read through most of the (really large) Discworld series and I can vouch that it is a good read.
Should I aim to start with book 1? I heard that isn’t important.
I didn’t but it was mostly due to ignorance. The first one is good but you definately can read that one out of order.
The Maze Runner was just meh. The first book was good but the sequels were underwhelming to say the least. Illuminae was fantastic! The sequel Gemina gets into the politics of the situation a little more and I loved it! Nevernight and the Darker Shades series are on my list to be read soon as well. Oh. And Mistborn. Because I’ve never read Sanderson. Gasp! I know I’m awful! Lol
I was going though your list thinking Ink Heart needs to be added to this list if he hasn’t read it yet. Excellent series with a fascinating concept. One of those books that makes you want to write fan fiction, without stealing her characters. You just want to follow the rules of her world. And I never write fan fiction.
The Maze Runner…hmmm read Divergent or Hunger Games instead. Maze Runner reads like a weak cousin.
I can’t find the right place to start Discworld. I’ve read book one. It left me curious because I understand other books are better, but I can’t say I loved it. I started to listen to another one on audiobook and I keep forgetting I’m listening to it. It’s not grabbing me. I don’t know. Too many people swear by them, so I’m trying.
We just picked up the Mistborn series for my son. I think I’m going to steal them and read them too.
I read the Hunger Games and loved it. Think I read all 3 in a week. Haven’t read Divergent. Mistborn is also on my list!
You can find a maps for various orderings of the Discworld books (the series is a set of storylines centered on various groups in the world: Death, The witches, the watchmen, …)
That makes the series sound even better.
Yes, you should read Brandon Sanderson’s books! He’s my favorite author. π I would start with the first Mistborn series, though–while Elantris is still good, the Mistborn series is even better. Brandon Sanderson is amazing at coming up with awesome worlds and magic systems that interact with the plot.
I’m also planning on reading the Great Library, Illuminae Files, and Shades of Magic series! I have Ink and Bone checked out from the library…just need to read it now. Currently I’m reading the Six of Crows series and rereading some other books as well.
Six of crows was AWESOME!
I absolutely recommend Shades of Magic and The Great Library! The last book is coming next month so not much waiting time involved, too π
I don’t really recommend Maze Runner but I do suggest people see for themselves. Discworld is one I’m super excited to start! Just don’t know when…
THE MAZE RUNNER MADE ME WANT TO DRIVE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC!
Ok that’s a bit dramatic … but I hated the series. I listened to the books as audiobooks because I loved the first Maze Runner movie … you are going to be SHOCKED how much the movie added in order to be exciting because the books are so lame omg.
I mean … you might like them … but I did not (obviously)
Nevernight is on my list too
And what are you even doing with your life that you havn’t started Illuminae or THE LOVE OF MY LIFE SHADES OF MAGIC?!
I hope you enjoy all your reads <3
*haven’t
It may shock and offend you, but up until about a month ago, I hadn’t ever HEARD of half of these series. Entering the book blogosphere has exposed me to so many books that I’m almost angry I didn’t know about before!
This is a great book list! There are definitely a few on here that I just recently discovered and added to my TBR or that have been on there for a while. I Am Number Four was kind of slow for me, but I’m hoping with everything already set up in the first book that the next one will have a slightly faster pace.
Thanks! I hope there are many enjoyable books ahead on both of our TBRs!
I know I already said this… but… You HAVE to start reading the I am Number Four series. It is just fantastic! it took me a few years but the last book was released until last year so… hence why it took that long. It is amazing, I enjoyed it so much, and I almost died when it ended haha (too dramatic) XD
It’s in the works, my friend. It’s high up in my TBR, though that’s not saying a lot. Lol.
