What counts as a Christmas movie?
That probably seems like a silly question. Christmas movies feature people celebrating Christmas, decorated trees, piles of presents, loads of snow, Santa Claus! But some movies don’t have such a clear line.
Presented here are a selection of movies that some people consider Christmas movies, while others do not.
The Home Alone Series
Probably the most Christmassy on the list. Kevin and his family gather together for a Christmas vacation, and there are plenty of presents and Christmas trees on display. A homeless man is given a Christmas miracle in the form of the sage-like advice of 8-year-old Kevin. An 8-year-old left home alone befriending a homeless man, that’s probably going to be okay, right? Even with all that holiday cheer, the core of this movie is still an 8-year-old beating the crap out of two would-be robbers. It’s beginning to look a lot like violence.
Gremlins
Well, it happens at Christmas time and Gizmo, who’s the real star of the movie, is actually a Christmas gift from failing-salesman father to can’t-follow-simple-instructions son. The rest however…
Batman Returns
It opens with a beautiful Christmas scene, which is quickly destroyed with the introduction of monster/baby Penguin. And there’s lots of snow, and… penguins, and……. Batman. Okay, so this is the point where the Christmas connection is getting a little ridiculous.
Die Hard
I’ve got nothing on this one. It happens at Christmas. A bunch of people are at a work Christmas party. That’s about it. I think Bruce Willis makes some joke about Santa Claus, but the connection is still pretty thin. Still doesn’t stop me from watching this one every year around this time!
Ah I love Home Alone! Definitely a Christmas movie! I am on the fence about Die Hard. My dad and brother watch it every Christmas but when I think about it it really is not a Christmas movie. Another one that my friends debate about is The Nightmare Before Christmas. Is it a Halloween or Christmas movie?
Ohh, good one! My wife loves Nightmare, so she watches it at Halloween AND Christmas.
Home Alone is definitely a Christmas movie. Gremlins is a stretch. But I was just talking to someone about Die Hard last night! (Were you reading my mind?) it’s always on at Christmas time but really, I don’t think it’s a Christmas movie at all!!
Seriously though – you’re a mind reader!
I knew you’d say that
Lol!!!!!!!!!
The only one on this list I consider a Christmas movie is Home Alone!
Home Alone is Christmasy for sure! What I forgot about those movies, I’ve been reminded as my 6 and 4 year old have just discovered them. This alarms me.
Anyways, you’ve just given me great ideas to watch Batman Returns and Die Hard now.
Glad to hear I won’t be the only one watching Die Hard!
Love me some Bruce Willis… don’t need too much incentive 😄
Aaah! It won’t be Christmas without Home Alone.
Love this list!! I really enjoy watching Home alone and die hard at this time of year too! (I don’t see it as strange either, since they always put die hard on tv at this time of year and it is set at Christmas- plus it’s *amazing* 😉 )
Hmmm…how about The Nightmare Before Christmas? It doubles as a Christmas and Halloween movie, which is kind of strange if you think about it. I watched Home Alone for the FIRST TIME last year and he really does beat the crap out of those guys lol.
