It’s time to talk books, everybody!
This week, we’re talking series. Shanah, the Bionic Bookworm, wants to know the top series we all want to start this year. Well, this was a pretty easy list to put together since there are SO many that I’ve been wanting to start and just didn’t have time to get to until this year (hopefully!)
DC Icons
by Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, Sarah J. Maas, & Matt de la Pena
Okay. Maybe this doesn’t exactly count as a series, but… deal with it. Superheroes are one of my favourite things ever and these are DC heroes. My heroes. I like all superheroes, but DC is where my true nerd-heart lies. Plus, they’ve found great writers to take on each book. Not sure if they tie-in with each other, but I kind of hope they do.
Mistborn
by Brandon Sanderson
Sanderson is one of those authors that I’ve been meaning to get to for years. Last year I read Steelheart, and I loved it. It was easy to say I was going to read more Sanderson at that point. And then someone told me that Steelheart wasn’t even his best!
The Nevernight Chronicle
by Jay Kristoff
The only Kristoff I’ve read is Illuminae, which was awesome. So based off of that, and the million-billion raves about this series, this one is a no-brainer.
Shades of Magic
by V.E. Schwab
Probably the series I’ve been wanting to get to more than any other. Can’t wait.
Legend
by Marie Lu
Would you look at that? Marie Lu is on this list twice!
I can attest for most of these! Wonder Woman was great, Nevernight and Godsgrave are like my favorite books ever, and the Legend series is amazing. I haven’t read Brandon Sanderson but I really want to read this series and I still have yet to pick up the Shades trilogy!
‘favourite books ever’ is quite the review! Lol! And I’ve heard a lot of people saying similar things. So… I’m just looking forward to it that much more!
I have quite a few favorite books ever 😂 But yes, the Nevernight Chronicles are definitely in the top. I hope you get to all these series this year! I know I’m striving to read the Shades of Magic series in 2018.
Book 1 of most of these series is currently on my reading challenge list. Not sure how many of these series I’ll get the finish, though…
I remember reading Legend quite some time ago, but I totally forget everything about the book except for one vague scene around a fire.
I’ve never read Sanderson either! I definitely want to get to at least one of his series soon. And I love the Nevernight series and the V.E. Schwab series, great choices😊
Thanks, Tammy! Looking forward to them ALL. Now I just need an extra 3 or 4 hours a day!
I have read Wonder Woman, A Darker Shade of Magic, and Legend and really enjoyed them all! I have to try and finish those series at some point this year!
Agreed. I have a lot of series/trilogies/duologies I want to finish this year. Six of Crows, Savage Song, Illuminae Files, The Reckoners. *sigh* Not enough time in a day!
DC Icons can definitely work as a series I think. I’ve heard so many good things about Bardugo’s Wonder Woman… I hope to get to it.
Hopefully we both enjoy it!
So many good series on your list! I read Shades of Magic and Nevernight in 2017, but both series were among the best I’ve read. Spectacular. I read DC Icons last week, both of them, and liked them. Plus, they look awesome on my bookshelf! 🙂
Awesome! As a guy who started reading comics before anything else, they just seem like the perfect thing to put front row on my bookshelf. I’m not crazy about the third book being Catwoman, but I’m super-pumped that the 4th is Superman!
LOL! I never read comics, but I do love all the movies, and television shows! And, except for the more current movies, I prefer DC over Marvel so I was super excited for this series. (My husband got interested when I told him the fourth was Superman. He said he may read Batman and Superman so we can continue our argument about which hero is ‘better’.)
That’s a DEEP conversation. Who’s better to read? Batman. It’s more interesting. There’s actually a element of suspense. He’s human. He could die. Who would I rather be? Superman. Almost nothing can hurt him. He flies. Who would win in a fight? Too many factors.
For a long time, Superman was my favourite. But once you’ve read him for a while, he gets boring. I slowly converted to being a bigger Batman fan. The writers beat that poor guy up, to brink of death, constantly. But he always finds a way to win the day. More recently (probably with the influence of a big Doctor Who obsession) I’ve kind of converted again to a bigger Green Lantern fan, despite that movie being HORRIBLE. (p.s. I don’t blame Ryan Reynolds. I think he was terrific in the role, the script, and just about everything else, was awful)
I think that’s why I always argue for Batman, simply because he’s human. Superman is the unattainable. Now my husband points out that Bruce is a billionaire, but still. I stand more chance of wealth than of suddenly acquiring all of Superman’s abilities. At least money is an ACTUAL thing.
My husband, he likes the idea of the biggest, strongest, most (nearly) undefeatable Superhero. You’re right, if I could have a wish granted I might choose to be Superman -but maybe because I think he’s a mostly happy dude, whereas Bruce feels very alone… it’s a really fun debate between us that’s gone on for years though. My daughter went completely different and chose Spiderman. 🙂
The kids love Spiderman! My boys were big on the Flash, too. The fun, wise-cracking heroes.
LOL, and young too. I think that helps them relate. Or younger, anyway. Then my daughter got into Green Arrow, but that was mostly because of the tv show.
I’m about halfway through reading Wonder Woman and it is honestly so good! There was a lot of hype surrounding it so I was kind of worried it wouldn’t live up to expectation but so far so good! In terms of The Legend series, I never ended up finishing it because I didn’t love the direction it was headed in but I absolutely love the first book and I sometimes reread it just as a standalone 🙂
Good to know! Thanks!
I’ve seen DC Icons everywhere so this year I have decided to read them. Great list!
I’ve also got Mistborn on my reading list!
I’ve seen the Wonder Woman book, but I had no idea there were other DC books out there! Looks like I’ve got something else to pick up…or force my mom to get in the library where she works…
I forgot all about these series! DC Icons, Shades of Magic and Nevernight Chronicle all are on my list! I hope you’re able to get to all of them this year!
Thanks! Me too!
Legend is awesome, I hope you get to it! Mistborn is on my TBR too, but idk when I’ll ever get to it because it also intimidates me
Well you love your superheroes Joe 😉 And I loved Legend so I would say Marie Lu deserves to be twice on your list 🙂
I have never been much of a superhero comic/movie aficionado, however those three authors are ones I highly adore and so every time I see them in advertising or a book store I want to read them more and more! I didn’t realize there were so many available!
Also, V.E. Schwab’s Shades of Magic! I have been meaning to dive into those for the longest time now!
Thank you for sharing!!!!!! Happy reading!
I absolutely cannot wait for you to get into Nevernight! I fully expect excited ranting every chapter. You’re going to want to talk to someone about what’s happening!
Thanks for participating 🙂
I want to read these series too! I’ve read Mistborn book 1. And I’ve read A Darker Shade of Magic but that’s it. We have a long reading road to go 😉
Ha ha! Tell me about it!
DC Icons!!!! I can’t wait to get my hands on Wonder Woman and Catwoman. I already got Batman and I just can’t wait to get to it but I have a lot of other books😓 I’ll read it soon enough tho, I’m a superheroes Nerd, especially Dc superheroes👌😍
Me too! I love all comics and superheroes, but DC is always where my heart will lie.
