We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal

WE HUNT THE FLAME
by Hafsah Faizal

Farrar, Straus and Giroux
May 14, 2019

From Goodreads:

People lived because she killed.
People died because he lived.

Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the king. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways.

Both are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be.

War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the king on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine.

The good people at Farrar, Straus and Giroux and Raincoast Books provided me with an ARC of We Hunt the Flame in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I really wanted to like this. It sounds great when reading the blurb and then you get into the book and it’s just not there.

The pace was m, by far, the bigger issue. It took a long, long time for the story to get going. Many of the early chapters could have been axed and not only would the book not suffer for it, it would thrive.

Beyond that, a lot of time was spent on the inconsequential, and then when something important or exciting popped up it was over before it started. The things I didn’t care about got chapters of coverage while the things I wanted were left out in the cold.

The characters were well thought out and interesting on the surface, but as the story moved forward most of them came off as false. They did things that seemed very unlikely for their personality type or habits. Of course that happens a lot in books, but we’re normally shown reason for it. In this case, the characters seem to turn on their own nature with no rhyme or reason other than to move the story forward.

Deus ex machina. Not in its truest sense, but characters seem to sprout new abilities at the damnedest times! This kind of thing isn’t a big deal when hinted at, or the possibility put into our heads. Imagine watching the Matrix and the possibility of Neo being “the one” isn’t addressed until that final scene in the movie. A lot of us would have been very confused, upset, or both.

Despite some solid world-building and initial characters, this one didn’t hit for me. As excited as I was for this one, I’m kind of hoping I’m part of the minority this one.

Contest of Covers – Wrapping up Round 2

What a round!

The choices were a little harder, but most of the winning covers won by a fair number of votes. Honestly, most of the match ups went exactly as I expected, except for the final. I thought Nevernight was going to end up in the final round. BUT, I may have thought that because of the weight that the title NEVERNIGHT carries. And as we know, this contest is not about the story within the book, but the cover without.

The two match ups in ROUND 3 are going to be some of the toughest choices yet. I have my thoughts on what the championship round will look like, but I can’t wait to see if it ends up coming true, or if there’s still another surprise or two in store!

Thanks to everyone who has been voting all along. This series of posts would not be possible without you.

Top 5 Book Dudes

In this week’s edition of Shanah’s Top 5 Tuesday we’re talking male leads. This is a tough one. Instinct has me reaching for my top 5 books that have a male lead, but that would defeat the purpose. The best male leads aren’t necessarily in my all-time favourite books.

Darrow (Red Rising)

Okay. So maybe SOME of the my top male leads are from my favourite books. Darrow is the guy that you pull for every moment you’re reading and he tends to outsmart everyone around him, including the reader. (though he’s nothing without Sevro!)

Neanderthal a.k.a. Cliff Hubbard
(Neanderthal Opens the Door to the Universe)

I’ve said it before, Cliff is my spirit animal and if he was a real guy, he’d be a best friend, a brother, or maybe an identical twin!

Hans Hubermann (The Book Thief)

Maybe he’s not technically the lead, but he’s close enough for me. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a character so instantly and fiercely likeable.

Ignatius Perrish (Horns)

This poor S.O.B. Every moment was spent either rooting for him, weeping for him, and laughing at his hi jinx.

Mr. Wednesday (American Gods)

At best, he’s morally grey, at worst, he’s downright evil. Either way, he’s entertaining and fascinating at the same time.

Fun fact about this post: Honourable mention to Kaz Brekker, Tyler Durden, and  Kvoth.

Top 10 All-Time Favourites

That’s right. This week, Shanah’s Top 5 Tuesday is a TOP 10! And it’s one of the easiest/hardest topics. All-time favourites. It’s like trying to pick favourite songs or movies off all time. A lot of titles come to mind instantly, but I feel like I’m going to forget some.

Odds are pretty good that it’s going to be the same books that always end up in my T5T posts. Let’s find out!

Ready Player One

We all knew it was going to be on here, so might as well get it out of the way first.

Golden Son (Red Rising Series)

The Red Rising Trilogy/Series was another no-brainer, but it I had to pick JUST ONE book, I would have to go with Golden Son. It’s like the Empire Strikes Back of the series. So good.

Hex

There’s probably something creepier out there, but I haven’t read it!

Six of Crows book cover

Six of Crows

I love a good heist, and this is one of the best.

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Can’t wait to see this movie, though we all know it won’t be as good.

The Graveyard Book

I was shocked at how much I loved this book. Especially since it’s a children’s book and I didn’t read until I was an adult.

The Lies of Locke Lamora

One of the most recent reads on the list, but it was just so delighted/shocked/infuriated at every turn that I couldn’t leave it off the list.

Godsgrave (Nevernight Series)

Like Red Rising, it’s really the series (so far) I’m putting on my list, but I have to pick one of the two released titles, it’s Godsgrave all the way.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay

I’m not usually much for historical fiction, but this one surrounds the birth of the comic book industry, something I’ve loved my whole life.

Steelheart

Speaking of superheroes, this book is everything you’d want from a sci-fi/urban fantasy and so cinematic it’s like watching a movie in your brain.

Fun fact about this post: This was way more fun and way less torture than I thought it was going to be…
