DISCUSSION: What counts as a spoiler??

I’ve been trying to get better at writing reviews. I guess we’ll see how that goes as time goes by, but sometimes when I read someone else’s review, it makes me wonder: What is a spoiler?

That may seem like a simple answer at first. It’s telling someone what happened in a story before they have a chance to discover it themselves. But how far does that go?

If I say, “Oh wow! What a twist ending!” I haven’t told what happens in the ending, but you now know there’s a twist. If you read that book, you’ll be looking for the twist. Constantly thinking, “is it that?” Point being, it’s going to affect the way you read that book. So isn’t that kind of spoiler?

Or, if there’s a book called, “One Thousand Dragons” but there’s actually not a single dragon in the book, is that spoiler territory to let people know that? Or it that just good reporting?

What about noting that a book is left open for a sequel? That tells you all kinds of things. Mainly, it implies the fate of characters mentioned in the review, potentially removing the anxiety of scenes where a character is in “mortal danger.”

Then again, maybe I’m overthinking this just a bit too much. Do you consider any non-spoilers to be spoilers?

Fun fact about this post: I’m not telling. You have to read it for yourself.
