Top 5 ending/last lines

I love a good final line. It can elevate a fantastic book to an epic book. An incredible final line can make you close the book and stare into the distance just soaking it in.

Yup, you guessed it. This week’s Top 5 Tuesday, hosted by Shanah the Bionic Bookworm, is the top last/final lines.

“He loved Big Brother.”

1984, George Orwell

“She was seventy-five and she was going to make some changes in her life.”

The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen

“Well, I’m back.”

Return of the King, J.R.R. Tolkien

“And I know we are undone.”

Golden Son, Pierce Brown

“A new terror born in death, a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend.”

I Am Legend, Richard Matheson

Fun fact about this post: Yesterday’s post didn’t have a fun fact.

  1. I plan on starting Golden Son soon – but holy hell! That’s how it ends? Ummmmm now I know it’s going to be good!!! And it’s been so long since I’ve read 1984. I really need to reread it soon!
Thanks for participating – added you to the list 🙂

          1. I’ve thought about doing that, but I always end up reading one thing with my eyes and something completely different with my ears.

          2. No. I think you’re right about that. Certain books, I feel like I wasn’t focusing the entire time and my enjoyment suffers. But unless you go back and re-listen, how can you tell? Maybe I didn’t miss anything and it just wasn’t my kind of book.

But out of caution and paranoia that I really am missing things, there are certain books I just won’t listen to. Stuff like A Darker Shade of Magic and The Nevernight series. The very top of my TBR. I won’t accept anything but a traditional, hardcopy read. Audio is good for re-reads as well.

          3. You and I are on the same wavelength here. There are certain books that I would never listen to. Mainly the ones that are highest on my TBR. I wouldn’t want to risk not connecting with them through audio!

  2. Hello JW!
I loved 1984 when I read it ten years ago, though I don’t remember much about it now. Maybe it is due for a reread 🙂 Great post!

  3. Ah this post is reminding me of some of my favourite endings. The end to 1984 is so powerful and scary. And I love the end to Golden Son and Return of the King!
