First Impression Friday | The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes

Welcome to another First Impression Friday. In case this is your first time, here’s the rundown:

• Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.
• Did you think you’d love and ended up hating it? Or did you think you’d hate it and wound up loving it? Or were you exactly right?
• Link back to Storeys of Stories so I can enjoy reading all the First Impression Fridays out there!

Based off of the murders by Jack the Ripper, this is story of an old married couple, on the brink of starvation, whose prayers are answered when a lodger shows up at their door.

Though the couple is thrilled to finally have some income again, the house matriarch starts to notice odd things about their lodger, all while a murderer is on the loose in their area.

The language could use some updating but, to be fair, the book is over 100 years old! There aren’t any references that I don’t understand, but some things are a little jarring. Despite the time gap, I’m really enjoying this book. The pacing feels right, and I’m genuinely fascinated with what’s going to happen.

My Prediction: 3.5 – 4 stars

Fun fact about this post: I’m done this book now. But I promise I wrote this post earlier in the week!
