Welcome to another First Impression Friday. In case this is your first time, here’s the rundown:
• Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions
and predict what you’ll think by the end.
• Did you think you’d love and ended up hating it? Or did you think
you’d hate it and wound up loving it? Or were you exactly right?
• Link back to Storeys of Stories so I can enjoy reading all the
First Impression Fridays out there!
Let’s talk about Unbroken: 13 Stories Starring Disabled Teens edited by Marieke Nijkamp.
“A YA Anthology of short stories featuring disabled teens, written by #OwnVoices disabled authors. The stories reflect a range of genres and disabilities; contributors include bestselling authors Kody Keplinger and Francisco X. Stork, as well as newcomers Fox Benwell, Keah Brown, and more.“
I can’t even remember the last time I read an anthology. A lot of mixed feelings regarding anthologies. I like the idea of them, and I get all excited about them, but then to actually pick one up feels like pulling teeth. Maybe I’m worried that I can’t get invested into the stories when they’re short.
Though I suppose that’s also an advantage, since if I’m not into a story, it’ll be over sooner than later.
This anthology started out with a story about a girl who (I think) was bi-polar that I really couldn’t get into, so there you go. Advantage: short story. But right after that was a really great story about a blind girl whose passion was tandem bicycle riding.
My Prediction: It’s been a long time since I’ve read an anthology, but I’m enjoying it, so I’m going to say 4 stars.
I wonder if it will be a 4 stars or not. I know that Marieke holds this topic close to her heart as she explained at YALC. Enjoy Joe!
I feel the same way about anthologies! Its nice to get a story you don’t like out of the way, but the ones that are really good are too short!! I hope this one lives up to your expectations 😀
I hope there were stories you really enjoyed than ‘meh’ ones. I’m sorry you didn’t get to be ultra lazy all week??? Is that the appropriate response? 😉
