First Impression Friday | City of Lies by Sam Hawke

Welcome to another First Impression Friday. In case this is your first time, here’s the rundown:

• Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.
• Did you think you’d love and ended up hating it? Or did you think you’d hate it and wound up loving it? Or were you exactly right?
• Link back to Storeys of Stories so I can enjoy reading all the First Impression Fridays out there!

Let’s talk about City of Lies by Sam Hawke.

I lean more toward Sci-Fi than fantasy of late, but I still love fantasy. Especially when I get something really fresh from it.

Our main characters in City of Lies have worked for the royal family for generations, protecting them from poisons. Through training and research, they can literally smell poisoned food from a mile away!

I don’t know the characters very well so far. They aren’t really popping out at me as much as I’d like, and there have been scenes where I’ve been introduced to several people in succession, and I don’t know who’s who. Not uncommon with fantasy novels, and not uncommon for me to not remember characters until I’ve met them for the 100th time.

Despite character issues, I have very high hopes for this one.

My Prediction: AT LEAST 4 stars
