However, below I’ve selected a number of quotes from the show that not only made good lines, but are sound advice whether you’re flying around the universe in a box, or driving to work in a mini-van. Enjoy.

Danny Pink, Soldier and Math Teacher

danny pinkA-Z Challenge Badge PMr. Pink was a teacher at Clara’s school, soon became her boyfriend, and gave his life in one of the most tragic ways the Whoniverse has to offer.

Before going any further, know that this article will spoils things that happen in season 8. Fair enough? Let’s go.

danny pink and clara oswaldWe first meet Danny at the school he and Clara work at. The story of them flirting with each other is pretty standard. Good looking people pretending to be nervous around other good looking people.

Fast forward to when he meets The Doctor. There’s an immediate dislike between them, which lingers for most of their time together. This is Twelve we’re talking about, so a lot of people can relate to Danny Pink in this case.

Danny goes on a few missions and shows us something we’re not used to seeing in a companion’s plus one. Competency.

danny pink and the doctorSure. Rory and Ricky/Mickey had some shining moments, but a lot of the time they were bumbling around and tripped over a solution. Not Pink. He’s an ex-soldier. He gets it done. And when the Doctor tells him what to do, Pink only does what Pink thinks is right.

Unfortunately, Danny dies rather unceremoniously: hit by a car while walking and talking on a cell phone. His consciousness is intercepted by the cybermen and he’s tricked into becoming one of them.

Danny-Pink-CybermanBut Danny Pink does not die a villain. He gains control of the entire Cyberman army just as they were one step away from taking over the Earth. Cyber-Pink orders his new army off of the planet, and saves the world.

Osgood, U.N.I.T. Scientist and in-show Whovian

doctor who osgoodA-Z Challenge Badge OOsgood is a semi-regular character on the show who works as a scientist for U.N.I.T.—I’ll get to them later, but let’s just say they’re the Men in Black of the Whoniverse.

Her first episode was The Day of the Doctor where she helped in thwarting a Zygon invasion. Also the day that a Zygon took her form. From that point forward, there were two Osgoods, each refusing to admit who was the human and who was the Zygon.

Until one of them was killed, by Missy, a.k.a. the Master. And we still don’t know if it was the human or the Zygon. There have been some developments in this area, but since I stated I wouldn’t spoil anything from the latest season, I’ll have to keep my mouth shut on that.

osgood-death-in-heaven-stWhat’s interesting about Osgood is she kind of represents a lot of us sitting at home watching the show. She’s a fan of the Doctor.

On her first meeting with the Doctor she was falling over herself and could hardly speak. She knows everything a human could know about the Doctor and usually finds herself desperate to help in some way, even though she’s not the action type.

osgood-zygon-inversion-end-570x322She’s so much of a fan that she’s always seen with a little Doctor flair, whether it’s a colorful scarf, a particular cardigan, a pair of sneakers, a shirt with question marks on the collar, or a bow tie—bow ties are cool.

Can you pick out which Doctors are referenced by Osgood’s fashion choices?

Nightmare in Silver

doctor vs doctorA-Z Challenge Badge NThere’s really only one reason I wanted to write about the episode Nightmare in Silver. The climax of the story has The Doctor playing an intense game of chess against himself.

After The Doctor is infected by some Cybermites, half of his brain is in control by the Cyberiad—the Cybermen’s collective mind. The Cyberiad is pumped to have control of a Time Lord. The Doctor is not so pumped to have been body snatched. But they’re at a stalemate. With each of them controlling half, neither will be in full control.

the doctor playing chessHence the game of chess. The game is for full control.

The Cyberiad forces The Doctor to make bad moves by agreeing to give hostages. Noble, but it puts The Doctor in a really bad position. Checkmate in four moves.

The Doctor, with all the his usual swagger, smiles and says he had checkmate in three moves. The Cyberiad begins demanding how. The Doctor taunts that the Cyberiad doesn’t have enough processing power to figure it out.

You should know that at this point in the episode, all of our heroes and friends are about to be killed by Cybermen.

In an effort to figure out The Doctor’s plan, the Cyberiad puts every asset it has on the problem. 3 million Cybermen worth, which shuts down all the bodies of the cybermen, allowing The Doctor’s friends to escape.

doctor cyber plannerThe Doctor then makes his three moves, which aren’t even related to the game of chess and wins the game.

It’s a fun episode to watch. We get to see Matt Smith play the hero and the villain back and forth like a tennis match. Even as the villain—made up of millions of computer brains—he’s animated and charismatic.

neil gaimanThe episode was written by the legendary Neil Gaiman—another N—a man who’s written in just about every medium out there.

Is this your favorite episode? If not, which one is?

The Master & Missy

Top-5-the-villains-of-doctor-who-42737e9e-a83a-4c5e-ab61-a7d9b52230b4A-Z Challenge Badge MRemember how The Doctor is always touted as the last of his kind? That’s not usually true. There’s another Time Lord that keeps showing up regularly and the name he chose is The Master.

I want to talk specifically about The Master that shows up in The Sound of Drums, opposite the Tenth Doctor, because he is brilliant in that iteration.

Portrayed by John Simm, The Master leaves you with no misconceptions about whether he’s a hero or a villain. He’s rotten to the core, but manages to be funny and charming while doing it.

the-master9I never understood how evil masterminds get so many henchmen to join their cause, but after watching The Master for a few minutes I was ready to sign up so we could have lunch together and tell stories.

Yes, I’m aware of how ridiculous I sound right now.

He also made a move that made the grammar nerd in me stand up and applaud. He ordered that the population of earth should be decimated. Then he elaborates saying, “remove one tenth of the population.”

He used decimate properly. Something that almost never happens in entertainment, or otherwise.

1063f260-6606-11e4-871e-1b62bfda1b3c_bbc-america-doctor-who-812-death-in-heaven-One The Master’s more recent tricks was answering a question I’ve had for a long time. Do time lords have males and females? Are they all male? Do sexes even exist?

On The Master’s latest return, portrayed by Michelle Gomez, he has become she. Missy, short for The Mistress.

I still wonder if we’ll ever see a female Doctor, even knowing it’s possible. I kind of want to see it. Can’t guarantee I’d like it, but I do want to see it.

deep-breath-missyThe last we saw The Master/Mistress, she was surrounded by angry Daleks, but attempting to tell them she had a new plan, so that’s not the last we’ll see of her.

I’m glad. I think The Master may be my favourite villain yet. But I do hope he/she remains as humorous as John and Michelle have portrayed him/her.

What’s your opinion of The Master? Would you want to see a female Doctor?

LEGO Dimensions starring Doctor Who

doctor who lego dimensionsA-Z Challenge Badge LIf you like Doctor Who and video games, then you owe it to yourself and the universe to give LEGO Dimensions a try.

LEGO Dimensions is one of those new generation games where it’s part game, part toy. It comes with a “portal” that you plug into your game system, then you buy characters which sit on top of the portal and those characters are magically in the game.

Yes, it’s a big money grab. And yes, it works. But it’s so much fun. The best/worst part is that all the characters they’re releasing for the game are aimed at parents and not kids. So any adult who tells you they bought it for the kids is lying and can’t wait to go home and play with toys.
Right out of the box, the game comes with the portal, Batman (with Batmobile), Wildstyle, and Gandalf. That’s enough to get you going, and even enough to have a little fun with Doctor Who. However, if you want to truly get into the TARDIS, you need to buy the Doctor Who pack.

Lego-Dimensions-Doctor-Who-9-1024x576This pack comes with the Doctor (12th), the TARDIS, and K-9. Along with having the supercool figures, it opens a separate part of the game with a Doctor Who storyline.

Right about now you’re probably thinking the game sounds pretty cool, but you’re not sold. Keep reading.

Even though the set comes with the 12th Doctor, in the game you can change to be any iteration of the Doctor. And when you die, you regenerate as the next Doctor in sequence!

LEGO Dimensions DoctorsThe TARDIS, which is super fun to fly around crashing into stuff, seems like a simple vehicle at first. But then you can go to the inside of the TARDIS (which is bigger.) And here’s another super cool touch: whichever Doctor you are at the time changes the appearance of the TARDIS! Cool, right?! I know!

lego dimensions cybermanAdd in the optional character pack that includes Cyberman and a Dalek, and this game is much bigger on the inside.

I love this game. My kids love this game. My wife—who doesn’t play video games—even picks up the controller once in a while.

Have you played? If so, do you love it? If not, what are you waiting for?

K-9 of Doctor Who

K-9 and Sarah JaneA-Z Challenge Badge KK-9 is a robot dog invented by a dude named Professor Marius and given to the Fourth Doctor because… I don’t know. Maybe he was delusional and thought the Doctor seemed like a responsible guy.

Though he’s been useful a time or two, K-9 is a far better concept that he is a character.

A robot dog that shoots laser beams?! That sounds incredible!

And I guess it is. Placed beside a loaf of bread, there’s no contest. But beside the TARDIS or even the sonic screwdriver…poochie doesn’t stand much of a chance.

Pa lego version of K-9erhaps if he had more of a personality. He was a bit too much like every other cliché robot to show up in sci-fi shows. Robotic, choppy voice. Unnecessarily pedantic vocabulary. Long explanations that would send almost anyone to that place of glazed over eyes and wandering thoughts.
Not all characters can be pure genius. There’s still potential for this pup if they decided to bring him back. But for now, the most fun you can have with K-9 is in the Lego Dimensions video game. Ride ‘em K-9!

Captain Jack Harkness, Time Agent

jack harknessA-Z Challenge Badge JThere’s so much to love about Captain Jack Harkness. He’s cool, charming, immortal, and hits on everything that moves.

Jack first meets the Ninth Doctor claiming to be a Time Agent and attempts to flew his authority. Those of you who’ve seen the episode will remember it as the one with the creepy kid in the gas mask who won’t stop asking, “are you my mummy?”

jack and roseThough Jack was once a Time Agent, it was a thing of the past and all his boasting of authority was his attempt at a con. Despite his attempts to trick the Doctor and run away with some kind of valuables, Jack ends up acting like a hero and wiggling his way into our hearts.

He even helps Rose and the Doctor stop a Dalek invasion. Unfortunately, in the course of the invasion, Jack dies. Lucky for him, Rose Tyler turns herself into an omnipotent time being and brought him back to life, making one little mistake along the way. She accidentally made it so that he can’t die.

jack harknessJack’s usually the first one to jump into battle, probably because he knows he can’t be killed, with a witty comment and wink to the closest pretty girl—or guy.

His adventures, and popularity with the fans, eventually led him to his own spin-off called Torchwood. In the show, which took its origin from the Doctor Who episode Tooth and Claw, Jack leads a group of like-minded individuals who investigate extraterrestrial happenings and collect alien technology for the good of the world. At least, generally speaking.

Face of BoeThe last time we saw Captain Jack, he eluded to possibly being the Face of Boe, a fact that has never been confirmed or denied by show creators.

Jack is another of these legendary characters that we can only hope we’ll see again, or at least something close to it.

What do you think of the Captain? Where does he rank among the Doctor’s many companions?

The Impossible Girl

screen-shot-2015-08-18-at-5-07-31-pmA-Z Challenge Badge IThe Impossible Girl refers to the plucky companion otherwise known as Clara Oswin Oswald. She started out as the companion to a grieving (nearly emo) Tenth Doctor.

She continues to remain a companion through his regeneration into the twelfth and—at the time of writing this post—current Doctor.

What makes her impossible? Excellent question. I’m glad I thought of it.

doctor_who_asylum_of_the_daleks_7
Where does she get the milk?

We first meet Clara in Asylum of the Daleks. She’s trapped inside, but has made a comfortable little home and assumed almost total control of the facilities computer functions, all while trying to master soufflés.

By the end of the episode we learn she’s been a Dalek the whole time without realizing it. She’s dead, and had been for a long time.

doctor-who
It’s smaller on the outside…

Next time we see her, it’s 1842 and Snowmen are coming to life, but aren’t interested in singing songs and hopping on a train.

The Doctor shows up to help, but had been travelling alone for six months due to his depression over the loss of Amy Pond. Clara shows up and appears determined to help the Doctor despite his objections. Since he never saw what she looked like in the asylum, it’s only when he discovers her name that he becomes both puzzled and intrigued. It’s short lived, since she died shortly after winning the Doctor over.

A mere episode later, we find Clara in our present time. She’s a nanny and quite bored. You’re probably getting the point by now.

In a great episode, Name of the Doctor, we finally get some answers.

DoctorWhoTrenzaloreTimestreamThey travel to a planet called Trenzalore, where the Doctor will eventually die, and find a future version of the TARDIS. Inside, the console has been replaced by a column of bright white lite. The time stream. An enemy, known as the Great Intelligence, jumps into the timestream claiming it will undo all the Doctor’s history. Clara throws herself in right after.

Screen Shot 2016-04-10 at 11.41.23 PM
“Don’t take that one…”

In a great montage, we get to see Clara interact with every version of the Doctor. Each time, saving him, even though she remains unseen to all but the 1st.

The Doctor had been saved many times, but is this the greatest? If not, which save was the best?

Headless Monks vs. Doctor Who

headless monks from Doctor WhoA-Z Challenge Badge HThe Headless Monks are also known as the Order of the Headless. How badass is that? Name aside, these are some badass warriors.

They started out as a group of religious, humanoid monks, as far as anyone can tell. Their beliefs encouraged listening to their hearts over their minds. Take this too literally and BAM! Headless Monks.

Now these menacing monks can run around and convert anyone they want into one of them, usually by putting a severed head into a box-like device. Though that’s only for the wealthy. Many heads just sit around on shelves somewhere rotting and trying to bite things. Yum.

Though they can die as easily as any humanoid, they have badass abilities. (I’m sorry for the overuse of the word ‘badass’ in this post, but these guys are just so…badass!)

They are incapable of being tricked or feeling fear. They can sense a person no matter where they are, which is probably the most useful of their abilities on account of the no head thing.

They also wield a red lightning energy that they can throw from their hands or channel into the swords they carry. And they don’t carry some kind of weird looking space sword. It’s an old school, badass broadsword.

knotTheir most impressive ability? They wear a hood, and it sits the same way it would sit on someone who has a head. When the hood is up, no one can even tell they’re headless. The opening is just pitch black. Pull back the hood—which the monks consider punishable by death—there’s just a weird little knot of skin. That part…not so badass.

This is a great villain that has lots of potential. So far, there are only two episodes with the monks. One and a half, really. Maybe even less, depending on your definition. I want to see more. A lot more.

What do you think of the monks? What’s your favourite underrated baddie of the Whoniverse?
